A timeline.<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The healing of a surgical wound goes through three overlapping phases, the duration of which depends on the size of the wound, the patient&#039;s health, and the consistency of wound care.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase A of wound closure (External healing)<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the point at which the wound is no longer open and the stitches are removed.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duration: Usually 7 to 14 days after the operation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characteristics: During this time, a stable, new skin closure forms. After suture removal, the wound is considered closed and sealed on the surface. However, the tissue is still very fragile and must not be subjected to any tension.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. Phase of proliferation and consolidation (The inner healing)<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this phase, the body begins to build new tissue beneath the closed skin surface.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duration: 3 weeks to 3 months after the operation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characteristics: During this time, the scar is often red, slightly raised, and active (itchy). When is a surgical wound completely healed and I can go back to using the bathtub or swimming?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can usually bathe or swim again once the surgical wound is completely closed and dry, which is typically 10 to 14 days after the operation. Before then, the scar should not be soaked to avoid infection. In cases such as carpal tunnel surgery, the scar should be monitored for a few days after the sutures are removed before being permanently submerged.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. When is a scar after hand surgery completely healed so that heavy lifting can be resumed?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full weight-bearing capacity (lifting heavy loads) is only restored once the scar has completed the internal stabilization phase. This takes 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the type of surgery (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome vs. fracture). Only then is the tissue stable enough to withstand tensile forces without the scar widening or internal structures (such as tendons) being endangered.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. When is a surgical wound completely healed and I can use the scar ointment?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should begin applying the scar ointment or gel as soon as the surgical wound has closed superficially and the scab has fallen off. This is the optimal time to keep the scar supple through massage and prevent it from hardening. Therefore, don&#039;t wait until complete healing (18 months) before applying the cream; start early, after about 2 to 4 weeks.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. What does it mean if the scar is still red after 6 months? Does that mean the surgical wound hasn&#039;t completely healed yet?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the scar is still red after six months, this means it is still in the active maturation phase and the healing process is not yet complete. The redness is a sign of increased blood flow and tissue activity. Although the surgical wound is closed, the scar is not yet completely healed. The redness should gradually fade in the following months.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. How long does it take for the internal healing of the scar to be complete?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal healing, meaning the remodeling and complete stabilization of the collagen tissue, is the longest process and usually takes 6 to 18 months. Only after this time is the scar completely healed and has reached its final color and firmness.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. When is a surgical wound completely healed enough to be exposed to the sun?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A surgical wound is only safe from the sun once it has fully matured (at least 6 to 12 months). Since fresh scar tissue contains no protective pigments, premature sun exposure can cause permanent hyperpigmentation. Until then, the scar must be consistently protected with SPF 50+ to avoid interfering with the healing process.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Can I make a scar on my face heal completely faster?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial scars tend to heal faster and produce better cosmetic results due to the area&#039;s good blood supply. The wound closure phase is often shorter. However, complete scar maturation still takes several months (at least six), and consistent UV protection is essential for optimal healing.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Is the surgical wound completely healed when the itching stops?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching is a common symptom during the active proliferation and consolidation phase (up to approximately 6 months). When the itching stops, this is a good sign that healing is progressing. However, it does not mean that the surgical wound is completely healed. The maturation and strengthening of the scar tissue continues for many more months.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. How can I support the complete healing of the surgical wound?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to support the complete healing of the surgical wound is through consistent scar care (daily massage with cream\/gel) and protection. Avoid pulling, friction, and UV radiation. After carpal tunnel surgery, early mobilization with a therapist is crucial for complete functional healing.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. What should I do if the scar still hurts after a year? Is the surgical wound not completely healed by then?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the scar is still painful after a year, the surgical wound has not fully healed. Persistent pain can indicate nerve compression (neuralgia) or deep adhesions of the scar to underlying structures.
